Washington Bankruptcy Exemptions
Did Washington's bankruptcy exemption amounts change in 2025?
Free Consultation: (855) 603-3300Yes. The 2025 legislature (2025 c 391) updated RCW 6.15.010 effective July 1, 2025, with significantly higher personal property exemptions: household goods $6,500 per spouse; a $10,000 bankruptcy wildcard; $15,000 aggregate motor vehicle equity; $15,000 tools of trade; $3,500 furs and jewelry; $3,500 private libraries; and phones, computers, and printers with no cap at all.
Personal injury proceeds also became uncapped in bankruptcy cases — a major change for injured debtors.
The petition date controls which figures apply: cases filed before July 1, 2025 use the old amounts; cases filed after use the new ones. If you're planning a filing, these updated numbers are the ones that matter now.
This page is general legal information, not legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Exemption figures were verified against official sources in August 2026; inflation-adjusted amounts (including Arizona's Prop 209 figures and county median homestead values) are computed estimates that change annually and should be confirmed by an attorney for your petition date.
